A Novel of Injustice, Faith, and Redemption
CONCRETE AND STEEL
He gunshot cracked through Liberty Street at 11:46 on a wet
Thursday night, sharp enough to silence the traffic for half a
heartbeat. Inside King Street Market, clerk Elijah Stone fell
behind the counter with one hand pressed to his chest. The
robber leaned over him, grabbed the register drawer, and ran
into the rain.
A camera above the cigarettes caught a tall Black man in a
charcoal coat. A second camera caught a dark Cadillac turning
toward downtown. Neither image showed a clear face. But the
robber wore a heavy silver ring shaped like a lion, and the pistol
in his hand had a pearl-colored grip. In Winston-Salem, more
than one detective knew a man who had owned both.
